All protect files from the provider itself, not just from hackers.

How we tested and ranked
We ranked encrypted cloud storage on where encryption happens, what is encrypted (contents, names, thumbnails), independent audits, open-source code, recovery design, apps and price. “AES-256 at rest” alone does not qualify, because it says nothing about who holds the keys.
Unsure what counts? Our guide to cloud storage encryption explains at-rest, in-transit and end-to-end. Methodology details are in our editorial policy.
The best encrypted cloud storage, reviewed
Proton Drive: best overall
End-to-end encryption by default, encrypted file names, open-source apps and a Swiss base. Best for privacy-first users and Proton Mail customers. Read the Proton Drive review.
Sync.com: best value for private sharing
Every file is end-to-end encrypted, with strong link controls such as passwords and expiry. No Linux client. Read the Sync.com review.
Tresorit: best for business
Zero knowledge plus admin controls, audit logs and data residency options. Pricier, but built for regulated teams. Read the Tresorit review.
Filen: best budget encrypted storage
Low prices per terabyte, end-to-end encryption and Linux support from a German company. A younger service, so keep backups.
Internxt: best EU lifetime option
Zero knowledge by default with lifetime plans and open-source apps. Read the Internxt review.
pCloud: best features, encryption as an add-on
The best virtual drive and media tools, but zero knowledge only in the paid Encryption folder. How pCloud encryption works.
Only want providers that never hold your keys? Our zero knowledge list is stricter.
See the best zero knowledge storageEncrypt any cloud yourself
You can add strong encryption to any cloud by encrypting files before upload. Free, open-source tools like Cryptomator create a vault inside your existing Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox folder. The provider stores only encrypted files.
This is a good option if you want to keep your current account. Step-by-step instructions are in encrypt files before uploading to the cloud.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Drive encrypted?
Yes, Google Drive encrypts files in transit and at rest, but Google manages the keys, so it can decrypt your files. Client-side encryption exists only for certain Google Workspace business plans. For personal use, add a tool like Cryptomator or choose an end-to-end encrypted provider.
What is the difference between encrypted and zero knowledge storage?
All reputable cloud storage is encrypted somewhere. Zero knowledge means encryption happens on your device with keys only you hold, so the provider cannot read files. Encrypted storage without zero knowledge protects against outsiders, not against the provider itself.
Can encrypted cloud storage be hacked?
No service is unhackable. With end-to-end encryption, a breach of the provider’s servers exposes only encrypted data. Attackers usually target your account instead, through phishing or reused passwords. Use a unique password and two factor authentication.
Does encryption slow down cloud storage?
Slightly, on older devices or with very many small files. On modern phones and computers, the difference is small compared with network speed. Encrypted services may also lack server-side previews or full-text search.
Is iCloud end-to-end encrypted?
Some iCloud data is always end-to-end encrypted, such as passwords and health data. With Advanced Data Protection turned on, most categories, including iCloud Drive and Photos, become end-to-end encrypted too. It is off by default.
